From Trash to Treasure!
ERIKO SATO
I was born in 1973 in Tokyo, Japan, to a sculptor and jewelry designer mother. Growing up under her influence, I was constantly engaged in creating and surrounded by an environment that incorporated play into everyday life.
Looking back on my creative journey, my mother's presence has been the most significant source of inspiration.
After graduating from high school with the aim of becoming a designer, I entered in Bunka Fashion College.
I studied a wide range of accessories, including bags, shoes, jewelry, and hats and graduated in 1995.
In the same year, I joined Issey Miyake Group as a designer for the women's division of the 'im product' brand, responsible for designing various items such as bags, blouses, and gloves.
The experience at this company was invaluable, allowing me to build a solid foundation as a designer surrounded by talented colleagues.
In 2007, I left the company and ventured into independent design.
From the same year, I began creating fashion jewelry, exploring unique materials such as damaged stockings and vinyl scraps that were unconventional in traditional jewelry.
From 2008 to the present, I have conducted POP UP sales in various well-known department stores in Japan.
Starting in 2021, I embarked on the development of jewelry using recycled plastic bottles.
Motivated by a sense of guilt regarding the plastic waste generated with each bottle use, I conducted research on cutting methods, heat temperatures, types, and surface treatments to maximize the appeal of various materials from dozens of recycled plasticbottles.
By controlling the challenging materials, I was able to create something truly unique. Using recycled plastic bottles, a material familiar to everyone, I aimed to create jewelry that people of all ages and genders can enjoy.
I hope to showcase the transformation of discarded waste ‘trash’ into ‘treasures.
